Wee Wonders at Douglas Park

A qualifying event for the Wee Wonders competition was held at Douglas Park on Thursday 12th April. Competitors from as far afield as Dumfries, Troon, Gullane and Stirling, along with our own budding stars Cameron Burns and Gethin Eynon,  produced some very high quality golf in the cold and blustery conditions. The best return of the day over the 9 holes 1,2 and 12-18  was a highly creditable 34. Given that the ages ranged from 7 to 11 this was an outstanding performance.

Sincere thanks to  Vice-Captain  Alan Dunipace for his registration duties; to members Gordon Innes, Len McFadyen and Ian Steven for acting as course marshalls and, of course, to Assistant Professional Andrew Hutchison for organising the event, including the course and the scorecards on the  day. Many of the parents in attendance remarked on how good the organisation of the event had been compared to similar events held on other courses.

Here are just some of the competitors who took part on the day.

R&A 9 hole Championship (Grand Final Carnoustie, July 14th 2018)

This new initiative by Scottish Golf gives Douglas Park members the opportunity to compete in a 9-hole Stableford pairs competition. Pairs can be female, male, mixed or junior, although only one under-18 per team is allowed.

The competition will be played on Bank Holiday Monday, May 7th, over holes 1,2 and 12-18 so that all competitors finish at the clubhouse. Handicap adjustments for the 9-hole course will be made on the day. The team score is calculated from the combined stableford points of both players.

The winning Douglas Park pair will qualify for the National final in June, with the opportunity to progress to the Grand Final at Carnoustie to be held on 14th July 2018.

For anyone NOT wishing to take part in the 9-hole competition, 18 hole play will be available but to ease the flow of play this will consist of playing the designated 9-hole course twice.

This is a unique opportunity for friends and relations to compete together for the chance of progressing to a prestigious Grand Final at the historic Carnoustie Links in the week before the Open Championship is played there.

Entries for the club competition can be made now via the BRS booking system in advance of the day itself – Monday 7th May 2018.

“The Donald Cameron team played their second division one match at home against a very good Dullatur team.

Alastair Thomson led out the team but was unfortunate to lose 2 down with his opponent scoring a birdie at the last hole to secure his win.

Craig young was also unsuccessful losing 4 & 3.

Clark Nelson produced some excellent golf to defeat Stirling University player Ellis Hart by the margin 3 & 2

Angus Watson finished strongly , scoring birdies at the final two holes to win 2 up against an ex pro golfer.

Matthew Anderson was 1 up playing the last hole but had to accept a halved match when his opponent birdied the last hole.

Chris McManus lost 2 & 1 but Stephen Wightman kept the DP score moving in the right direction with a fine 2 & 1 win

Angus Carrick proved too strong for his opponent winning comfortably 5 & 4 – the highlight of his round being the eagle 3 at the 10th (a drive,a 4 iron to 3 feet and a single put!)

The team won by the tightest of margins 4.5 to 3.5.

Next Wednesday ,the 31st, the team are again at home V Bishopbriggs.

Team Manager”

“Following their promotion to Division 1 the Douglas Park Donald Cameron team faced a very difficult opening match away to the all conquering Cawder team.

Cawder had emulated the DP team’s performance in going undefeated in their 2016 league matches and going on to win the Boundary Bell and the Inter-Cities finale V Turnhouse.

In the opening match Alastair Thomson played a superb match to defeat Andy Fairbairn 2 up.

Clark Nelson , returning to the fold after a number of years away , could not sustain his earlier good form and lost 4 & 3.

Craig Young , playing over a course he was once a member of , recorded an excellent 3 & 2 win.

Unfortunately we then lost the next 3 matches with Angus Carrick losing 3&2 , Chris McManus losing 4 & 3,and team Captain , Angus Watson losing 1 down.Angus had been 2 down with 2 to play and had registered a birdie at the 17th to keep the game alive but could only halve the final hole.

Matthew Anderson was in great form registering a comfortable 3 & 2 win.

With the match closely balanced the overall result was in the hands of our Match Sec’y Stephen Wightman. One down playing the 18th , a par 3 hole, Stephen sank his birdie put for a 2 but saw his opponent following him in thus Stephen lost 1 down and the team lost by the tight margin 5 matches to 3.

This was a creditable performance in their first match in Division 1 and the team are now looking forward to entertaining Dullatur next Wednesday the 24th May at Douglas Park.

Members wishing to support the team will be made most welcome.

Ladies GetIntoGolf Evening Success

Following major publicity on social media and the delivery of 5000 flyers and 120 posters by 57 Douglas Park Ladies locally and further afield, 57 Ladies (yes honestly!) turned up at our Ladies Open Evening on Wednesday.

Our guests spent a happy evening testing their golf skills on various fun activities set up by Robert, had guided tours of the Golf Club, an information session followed by an excellent buffet. The highlight, however was definitely the Safari Tour of the course by Drew, suitably attired in his Safari hat and accompanied by assorted jungle beasts.

So Far Sixteen Ladies have taken out the Get into Golf Membership and lots of application forms have been requested.

Many thanks to all the ladies who helped with the distribution of the flyers, to the 24 ladies who worked so hard on the evening at registration and as guides, all of whom were praised to the hilt in the feedback survey for their friendliness and helpfulness, to Ann Scott for her fantastic help, Robert, Lisa and Drew and particular thanks to Carol Fell who was a major force behind all the publicity before, during and after the event.

Scottish Golf PING Mixed Qualifier at Douglas Park

26 pairs took part in our club qualifier today (Sunday) for the newly introduced Scottish Golf PING Mixed Championship, playing for the Isobel Currie Trophy.

In dry, bright and breezy conditions, scoring was difficult for most of the field, but after all was done, the pair who managed to top the leader board were Janice Cullens and Callum Cooper (combined h’cap 19) with an impressive 41 stableford points!

The top three places were as follows:

  • Winners:       Janice Cullens & Callum Cooper             –           41 pts
  • Runners-up: Carol & Lindsay Stuart                               –           36 pts
  • Third:             Christina Graham & Alistair Forrest     –           35 pts

Janice and Callum are now put forward as Douglas Park’s representatives, hopefully in the top 40 scoring qualifiers, for the National Final over the Queen’s Course at Gleneagles in September.

Thank you to the members of the Ladies’ section, led by Barbara Aitchison, and the Assistant Professional Andrew Hutchinson for bringing together all of the arrangements, including scoring input on the PSI terminal for the day.

Diary Date to note: The Mixed Greensomes Trophy on Sunday 8 October.

“The Girls Section has been fortunate in receiving a new trophy which is intended to encourage the younger girls without handicaps in competitive play.  The trophy is played for at 3 monthly intervals and the girls got the season off to an early start on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

The competition was played over six holes and our most recent new girl member, Cristiana Capaldi won the trophy with some very impressive golf. “

Congratulations to the Juniors who played for the club in the Marley Trophy  last year.
The trophy was presented to manager Chris McManus at the Donald Cameron  League Dinner and prize giving last week.
The team were winners again for the sixth occasion in the league playing  against the other six clubs in the area.
The Marley League will take on a different formula in the incoming season to  accomadate the fewer clubs who are able to field a team.
The new age group will be under 16 yoa and the competition will be on a  stableford situation with each club acting as host on one occasion during
the season.
The winner being the club to accumulate most points at the end of the  fixture list.
The photo is of our “young” group who have been attending the coaching  sessions with our Professional staff. Skills being honed under the supervision of “coach” Andrew.
Hopefully the same group will be winners of the Trophy again in the not too  distant future
Also thanks go to team managers Christopher McManus and Matthew Anderson who marley were winners previously as players and are now winners as managers
Well done to all concerned.

John Telfer
Match Secretary Marley and Punchcraft Leagues
