After an incredible start to the season, Douglas Park’s Junior JJ McCarry (scratch) Team travelled to second placed Kirkintilloch with a chance to make it 6 wins out of 6 and win the JJ McCarry Division 2!!!
With 4 matchplay games being played, a single point would have been enough and Sophie Murphy duly delivered with an emphatic 8&7 victory. The team wanted to maintain their 100% record though and Greg MacLeod won a tight match 2&1 to ensure Douglas Park couldn’t lose. Ross Mirmelli, carrying an injury, staged a valiant fightback but unfortunately lost 5&4 which meant it all came down to David McColl on the 18th green. Losing 1 down, David chipped to 4ft and, knowing the importance of the putt, confidently rolled it home for a 2.5 – 1.5 victory!!! Congratulations to the team of Farris Hassan, Chris Lathan, Greg MacLeod, David McColl, Gerard McKinlay, Louie McMillan, Ross Mirmelli, Sophie Murphy, Archie Scott, Kirstie Souter, Scott Souter and Robbie Trainer. Greg MacLeod also appears to have the won the Order of Merit for most points won!
The league and results can be viewed at www.golf-in-glasgow.com My thanks go to Calum Gordon for running the team and to all the parents for your assistance in transporting the juniors to the various matches. For 2019, both our Junior JJ McCarry and Marley teams are currently without a sponsor so if anyone knows of a local business who may wish to provide team polo shirts, please get in touch.
Craig Turner Junior Boys Convenor
The Douglas Park team met local rivals , Glasgow , missing three of their regular players , Craig Young,Alistair Thomson & Stephen Wightman.
Clark Nelson led out the team and after a slow start Clark played some very impressive golf to win 1up. The highlight of his round was a hole-in-one at the 15th – his club selection , a 7 iron !!!
Team Captain Angus Watson was in great form winning comfortably 4 & 3 over a very good opponent Nicky Gold.
Graeme Anderson kindly agreed at the last moment to play following Craig Young’s injury exit and lost 3 & 2.
Matthew Anderson lost on the last green as did Ross Cameron.
Andrew Abercrombie won a hard fought encounter by the margin 2 & 1 and Michael Giovannetti also recorded a victory on the 17th green by a score-line 3 & 1.
Scott Souter , a junior member making his second appearance for the team following his excellent win at Dullatur , was 3 up with 7 to play but ran into his opponent making birdie, eagle par, par, par to go dormie 2 down
with the match finishing on the 17th green. This match was an excellent experience for Scott who , I am certain , will be an exciting prospect in the coming years.
The result of the match was a tie with 4 wins each thus the team are unbeaten at home against the two top teams in the league , Cawder & Glasgow.
The team travel to Sandyhills next Wednesday the 27th June
A dry forecast for finals day on Sunday , why not come down and support all the finalists.

JJ McCarry Team
At the halfway point of the season, our JJ McCarry Juniors are sitting top of League Division 2 with a perfect 100% record. We started the season at home to Kirkintilloch and won 3.5-0.5 with wins from Scott Souter, Farris Hassan and David McColl and a half for Greg MacLeod.
We then came up against a strong Bearsden side which contained 2 county players, and boasted handicaps all lower than ours, and ran out 4-0 victors. Incredible wins from David McColl and Robbie Trainer, over the 2 county players, and emphatic wins also from Greg MacLeod and Sophie Murphy (on her competitive debut) completed the whitewash.
The return match at Bearsden looked a tough one, away from home and with a few regulars missing, however the team managed another victory. Robbie Trainer led the team out against one of Bearsden’s county players and held onto a narrow 1up lead for much of the round. After driving into the trees at 17 and having to lay up, he proceeded to hole a 30ft putt for a par to take a 1up lead down the last and secure a win. Greg MacLeod and David McColl had impressive victories to bring home the victory. Ross Mirmelli (making his competitive debut) stepped in at the last minute and unfortunately came up against an opponent having a great night.
Tonight (Friday 8th) marks our final home fixture against Dougalston with Robbie Trainer, Ross Mirmelli and debuts for Chris Lathan and Archie Scott.
Our Marley team have played just one match so far, away at Hilton Park. Unfortunately, due to the bank holiday weekend, we only had a 3 person team and, with the Marley format being a 4 person combined stableford competition, this put us slightly behind. We still have 5 fixtures to make this up, starting this Sunday (10th) away at Glasgow, with Ross Mirmelli, Archie Scott, Chris Lathan and Cameron Burns representing the club.
My thanks go to all team members and their parents for their commitment, along with both team managers for their ongoing support; Calum Gordon (JJ McCarry) and Alan Dunipace (Marley)
72 ladies took part in a Tri-am on Friday 1st June. This was over 11 holes as there were dire warnings of thunder storms after 2.00pm. — In the event it did not happen & the day was completed in warm sunshine.
The 2 best stableford scores counted at each hole
Congratulations go to the winners with 54 points — Barbara Aitchison, Alison Miller & Elaine McEwan.
Runners up with 53 points were June Gordon, Susan Rattray & Linda Robertson.
At the same time they had an individual competition where they were given stableford points which they could loose in certain circumstances.
There were 6 of our older ladies who took part in the putting competition which Drew so ably organises for them. This was won by Marjory Cooper after a playoff & some amazing putting.
The Primrose Cup for the junior girls was won by 13 year old Sophie Murphy (pictured above)
In the evening everyone returned for another of Lisa’s excellent buffets & a prize giving.
A qualifying event for the Wee Wonders competition was held at Douglas Park on Thursday 12th April. Competitors from as far afield as Dumfries, Troon, Gullane and Stirling, along with our own budding stars Cameron Burns and Gethin Eynon, produced some very high quality golf in the cold and blustery conditions. The best return of the day over the 9 holes 1,2 and 12-18 was a highly creditable 34. Given that the ages ranged from 7 to 11 this was an outstanding performance.
Sincere thanks to Vice-Captain Alan Dunipace for his registration duties; to members Gordon Innes, Len McFadyen and Ian Steven for acting as course marshalls and, of course, to Assistant Professional Andrew Hutchison for organising the event, including the course and the scorecards on the day. Many of the parents in attendance remarked on how good the organisation of the event had been compared to similar events held on other courses.
Here are just some of the competitors who took part on the day.
R&A 9 hole Championship (Grand Final Carnoustie, July 14th 2018)
This new initiative by Scottish Golf gives Douglas Park members the opportunity to compete in a 9-hole Stableford pairs competition. Pairs can be female, male, mixed or junior, although only one under-18 per team is allowed.
The competition will be played on Bank Holiday Monday, May 7th, over holes 1,2 and 12-18 so that all competitors finish at the clubhouse. Handicap adjustments for the 9-hole course will be made on the day. The team score is calculated from the combined stableford points of both players.
The winning Douglas Park pair will qualify for the National final in June, with the opportunity to progress to the Grand Final at Carnoustie to be held on 14th July 2018.
For anyone NOT wishing to take part in the 9-hole competition, 18 hole play will be available but to ease the flow of play this will consist of playing the designated 9-hole course twice.
This is a unique opportunity for friends and relations to compete together for the chance of progressing to a prestigious Grand Final at the historic Carnoustie Links in the week before the Open Championship is played there.
Entries for the club competition can be made now via the BRS booking system in advance of the day itself – Monday 7th May 2018.
