With less than 40% of the required entries received to make this year’s tournament viable, the decision has been taken to cancel for this year.
Presented to the Club by Past Captain John and Ladies’ Past Captain Jean Watson in 1972, the Douglas Park Eagle has been widely acclaimed as one of the foremost events of its kind in the golfing calendar and celebrated a most successful 40th anniversary in 2012.
However, numbers have been showing a steady decline these past few years with last year’s competition also having to be cancelled. It was thought a change of format from foursomes to greensomes would attract a wider golfing audience but this, disappointingly, did not materialise.
On the evidence of last year and this, it is clear the Club will require to make a judgement on the future of the “Eagle” in its current form.
