2nd February 2018Club Captain George Roberts chaired the annual Douglas Park Burns Supper on Friday, 26th January.
A large and appreciative audience were thoroughly entertained in an evening billed as one of ‘Word and Song’.
The evening got off to a great start with a rousing address to the haggis by Past Captain Colin McEwen.
After an excellent dinner, Jeanie Sutherland won a whisky and chocolate matching experience for four guests at Glengoyne Distillery, very kindly donated by club member Archie McSporran.
The after-dinner entertainment included a quite outstanding Immortal Memory delivered by main speaker Graham Hill in tandem with young Zoe Craig. To see how Zoe won the hearts of the audience with her rendition of Burns’ poems and songs was a particular highlight of the evening.
Graham and Zoe were ably supported by Charlie Newlands M.B.E. who toasted “the lassies” in a most amusing and entertaining fashion and Tayler Morgan who gave an excellent and feisty reply.
Musical interludes were provided by the exquisite harmonies of the Westertones, who also led the audience in a stirring ‘singalong’ towards the end of the evening. A warm and witty vote of thanks was delivered by vice-captain Alan Dunipace.
Immense thanks to Lisa Cuthbert for her organisation and support both in the lead-up to the evening and on the night itself.
Graham Hill was kind enough to e mail that ” it was a wonderful evening and one of the best Burns Suppers I have ever been at ………..the audience were super and a real pleasure to speak in front of”. For someone with such wide experience of Burns Suppers in Scotland and beyond to write such a testimonial is praise indeed for the Douglas Park “experience”.
Thanks to all of you who attended for making it such a special night
